Stredoveké umenie dodnes ľudí fascinuje. Jednak svojou estetickou kvalitou, ale aj určitou bizarnosťou. Daniel Holland tiež patrí k milovníkom malieb tohto obdobia. Všimol si tiež, že stredovekí maliari často pomerne vtipne znázorňovali zvieratá, ktoré nikdy nevideli. Odkázaní boli len na ich sprostredkovaný popis a vlastnú fantáziu.
Ich svojrázne vyobrazenie slonov, veľrýb či hrochov pripomína skôr akési podivné mimozemské bytosti a dnes spôsobuje pobavený úsmev.
